Assumption University of Thailand (AU), through the Theodore Maria School of Arts, joined international scholars, researchers, and cultural leaders for the International Conference on Tamil and Thai Studies, held in Thailand from June 26–28, 2026, under the theme “External History of the Tamils and the Thais.
The conference was jointly organized by the Institute of Asian Studies, Chennai, India, the International Thirukkural Foundation, Mauritius, and Assumption University of Thailand through the Theodore Maria School of Arts, bringing together participants for three days of academic exchange, cultural reflection, and international collaboration.
The event explored the long historical connections between Tamil communities and Thailand, as well as the wider Southeast Asian region. Presentations and discussions focused on Tamil language, culture, trade, religion, migration, literature, and the continuing influence of Tamil heritage across Asia and beyond.
The conference highlighted the importance of Tamil studies as a global field of scholarship. Sessions examined ancient maritime routes, early trade with Rome, Greece, Babylonia, Arabia, and Southeast Asia, the role of Tamil traders, Buddhist and Hindu traditions, classical Tamil literature, and the Tamil diaspora. Special attention was also given to Tamil cultural connections with Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, China, Korea, Japan, Mauritius, and other parts of the world.
Throughout the three-day program, scholars presented research in plenary and parallel sessions, creating space for meaningful academic dialogue and future collaboration. Topics ranged from ancient Tamil port cities and spice routes to the spread of Tamil culture through Southeast Asia, the influence of classical Tamil heritage, and the role of the Tamil diaspora in preserving language, identity, and cultural memory.
In addition to the academic sessions, the conference featured cultural programs, book exhibitions, book releases, and exhibitions on early Tamil traders and the global spread of Tamil language and culture. These activities added warmth and colour to the gathering, helping participants connect scholarship with living culture.
The conference served as an important platform for strengthening academic and cultural ties between Tamil and Thai studies. It also reflected AU’s commitment to international education, intercultural understanding, and scholarly cooperation across borders.
The organizers expressed appreciation to all participating scholars, guests, partner institutions, and supporters who contributed to the success of the conference. The story and highlights from the event will be shared through academic, cultural, and institutional networks, allowing the conference’s message of shared history and friendship to reach an even wider audience.
