Bamboo+ Builds More Than a Pavilion as AU and USJ Strengthen Design Partnership

The Montfort del Rosario School of Architecture and Design, Assumption University of Thailand (AU), recently hosted the AUxUSJ Bamboo+ Workshop 2026, an international collaborative design-build program held from June 13–16, 2026, at AU’s Suvarnabhumi Campus.

The workshop reflected the School’s multidisciplinary approach to architecture and design, which brings together art, culture, science, and technology to create meaningful built environments. This spirit was brought to life as students and lecturers from AU and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Macau, worked together on a real-world community design project.

The workshop brought together  students and lecturers from AU and 10 students and 3 lecturers from the Department of Architecture and Design, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Saint Joseph. Working in international teams, participants collaborated on the design of a bamboo pavilion for the Federation of Thai Sea Salt Farmers, a community organization dedicated to preserving Thailand’s traditional sea salt farming heritage.

The project connected sustainable architecture with community engagement. Students were challenged to think beyond the classroom and consider how design can support local identity, traditional livelihoods, and shared cultural knowledge. Through the use of bamboo, the workshop also encouraged students to explore natural materials, hands-on construction methods, and environmentally responsive design.

Following the design workshop, construction of the pavilion is scheduled to begin in early August 2026 at Sam Phao Thong Sea Salt Farm in Samut Songkhram Province. The project will continue with follow-up academic activities at the University of Saint Joseph in Macau in December 2026, further extending the collaboration between the two institutions.

The AUxUSJ Bamboo+ Workshop 2026 reflected the ongoing academic partnership between AU and the University of Saint Joseph under their Memorandum of Understanding. By engaging students in a design-build project that serves a local community, the workshop offered valuable hands-on experience in sustainable architecture, cross-cultural collaboration, and professional practice while strengthening the relationship between AU and USJ.
