Shanghai Delegation Strengthens Thailand-China Ties at AU

Assumption University of Thailand (AU) welcomed a delegation from the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference to its Suvarnabhumi Campus on May 18, 2026, for a visit that brought together education, culture, innovation, and the enduring friendship between Thailand and China.

The afternoon offered more than a formal campus call. It became a meaningful exchange between people and institutions that share a belief in education as one of the strongest bridges between nations.

A Warm Welcome to the Shanghai Delegation

The delegation was led by Zhao Zhuping, standing committee member of the Shanghai CPPCC and deputy director of the Committee on Foreign Friendship Affairs. He was joined by Zhang Min, deputy director of the Research Office of the Shanghai CPPCC; Xu Mei, full-time deputy director of the Ethnic and Religious Affairs Committee of the Shanghai CPPCC; Yao Jie, director of the Administrative Security Division of the General Office of the Shanghai CPPCC; Guo Ying, director of the Office of the Committee on Foreign Friendship Affairs of the Shanghai CPPCC; and Liu Gongbo of CP Group.

They were welcomed by senior representatives of AU, including Asst. Prof. Dr. Kitti Phothikitti, Vice President for Educational Innovation and Graduate Studies, Dr. Kitikorn Dowpiset, Vice President for Moral Development Education; representatives from the Graduate School of Business and Advanced Technology Management; Dr. Satha Phongsatha, Dean of the Graduate School of Human Sciences; Dr. Ravivat Rugsaj, Chairperson of Mechatronics Engineering and Artificial Intelligence Department, the Vincent Mary School of Engineering, Science, and Technology; Asst. Prof. Dr. Nutthaphut Pandjad, Dean of the Albert Laurence School of Communication Arts; Mr. Zhao Peiqin, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Assumption University; and representatives from the International Cooperation Office of the Thai-Chinese International College.

Together, the gathering reflected AU’s long-standing role as an international university where cultures meet, ideas travel, and relationships grow through education.

A Campus Built for Global Connection

The program began with a guided tour of AU’s Suvarnabhumi Campus, a university environment known not only for its striking architecture, but also for the way it brings learning, culture, faith, technology, and community into one shared space.

The delegation visited the Cathedral of Learning, the Confucius Institute at Assumption University, the PKU-AU Cultural Technology and Social Innovation Lab, the Gabriel Mary Research and Learning Center for New Energy Vehicle Engineering, and the John XXIII Conference Center.

Each stop told part of AU’s story.

The Cathedral of Learning offered a powerful introduction to the university’s identity and spirit. The Confucius Institute highlighted AU’s commitment to language, culture, and Thailand-China understanding.

The PKU-AU Cultural Technology and Social Innovation Lab reflected the university’s growing commitment to research, creativity, and cross-border collaboration. The Gabriel Mary Research and Learning Center for New Energy Vehicle Engineering pointed toward the future of technology, mobility, and sustainable innovation.

Together, the tour showed a campus that is not simply a place of study, but a living platform for global learning.

Culture, Innovation, and Shared Purpose

Following the tour, the delegation and AU representatives gathered for a conference session at the John XXIII Conference Center. The discussion offered an opportunity to exchange perspectives on higher education, cultural cooperation, innovation, and the role of universities in preparing young people for an increasingly connected world.

For AU, the visit reflected a core belief: international cooperation becomes most meaningful when it is grounded in human connection. Universities do not only produce graduates. They cultivate understanding. They create spaces where people can listen, learn, and imagine new possibilities together.

This spirit was especially meaningful in the context of Thailand-China relations. As both countries continue to deepen ties in education, culture, business, tourism, technology, and people-to-people exchange, universities such as AU play an important role in turning friendship into action.

Building Bridges Beyond the Visit

The visit also underscored AU’s broader mission as an international Catholic university committed to academic excellence, moral development, and service to society. Through programs, partnerships, and research platforms that bring together Thai, Chinese, ASEAN, and global perspectives, AU continues to position itself as a place where education reaches beyond borders.

For the Shanghai delegation, the afternoon offered a closer look at AU’s academic environment and its growing platforms for innovation and cultural exchange. For AU, it was an opportunity to welcome respected partners from China with warmth, dignity, and genuine hospitality.

In the end, the visit was not only about a campus tour or a meeting agenda. It was about the quiet power of education to connect people across languages, borders, and generations.

At Assumption University of Thailand, that bridge continues to be built one conversation, one partnership, and one shared vision at a time.
