Nearly 100 students explored Mandarin, Chinese characters and traditional folk sports during a three-day cultural program.
The Confucius Institute at Assumption University (CIAU) concluded a three-day Chinese language and cultural program at Saint Gabriel’s College on August 6, giving nearly 100 students an engaging introduction to Mandarin and traditional Chinese activities.
Held from August 4 to 6, the program featured hands-on workshops led by CIAU teaching staff, who brought Chinese language and heritage to life through multimedia presentations, creative activities, games and traditional sports.
Chinese characters took center stage during one of the program’s most popular sessions. Students learned how characters developed and explored the meanings behind their forms through visual materials and word-guessing games.
They then used colorful modeling clay to shape their own Chinese characters before presenting their creations in simple Mandarin. The activity combined creativity with character recognition, writing practice and public-speaking skills.
The cultural experience continued with pitch-pot, known as touhu, and shuttlecock kicking, known as jianzi. CIAU educators introduced the history, cultural significance and rules of the two traditional Chinese folk sports before guiding students through practice sessions and friendly team competitions.
The activities filled the venue with laughter, movement and plenty of good-natured rivalry, creating a relaxed setting in which students could learn about Chinese culture beyond the classroom.
Students responded enthusiastically to the interactive format, with many expressing interest in joining future Chinese language and cultural activities organized by CIAU.
The program strengthened educational ties between the Confucius Institute at Assumption University and Saint Gabriel’s College while supporting Mandarin education and greater cultural understanding among Thai and Chinese youth.
CIAU plans to continue working with local schools to provide creative and accessible programs connecting students with Chinese language, traditions and everyday culture.
