Dr. Matthew Reed Merritt

In the hallowed halls of Assumption University of Thailand's Graduate School of Human Sciences, Dr. Matthew Reed Merritt stands as a beacon of inspiration, reshaping the landscape of education with unwavering dedication. As an instructor with more than twenty-five years of experience, Dr. Merritt has artfully merged the roles of teacher, researcher, writer, and academic advisor to forge a profound impact on the next generation of international educators.

"In my current role, I feel very lucky to have some influence on the next generation of international educators," Dr. Merritt reflects. "Education is and always has been about people and relationships."

In his articulate discourse, he unveils the essential components of his mission: teaching, research, writing, and academic advising, each woven seamlessly into the tapestry of his educational journey. Dr. Merritt's philosophy centers on the notion that education transcends mere policies; it thrives when it recognizes the intrinsic nature of the industry.

"Improving schools happens on a school-to-school, even person-to-person, level," he states emphatically. "Through my research, publications, advising, and teaching, my goal is to open this idea up to others."

In a poignant letter addressed to his students, Dr. Merritt ardently refutes the age-old adage, "those who can't, teach," asserting that the inverse holds true. "I have been a teacher for a lot longer than my formal 26-year career," he attests, reminiscing about his journey as a coach, trainer, and camp counselor, that have shaped his academic skill-set.

"I chose to teach over other career options," he reveals, "because there is no better identity than one of helping others love learning." His motivation, he assures, is not a pursuit of wealth or fame, but rather a legacy of "great joy and satisfaction in helping others to grow, to improve, and to find and follow their passions."

Dr. Merritt's educational evolution is as profound as his commitment to the craft. He no longer views teaching as a one-way transmission of knowledge but as a dynamic, collaborative endeavor that fosters innovation, inquiry, analysis, and reflection.

"I try to teach, not as a single source with all the knowledge, but as an experienced learner who wants to help others become better learners," he shares, echoing a pedagogical ethos that transcends convention.

His parting words to his students encapsulate his ethos: "I am delighted to be your teacher and I am honored to help the next generation of educators and leaders develop their own sense of professional fulfillment. Whether you are just entering the field or are a seasoned veteran, wear your title with pride. You are a teacher, you are a leader, and you can! Best of luck in your pursuit of an advanced degree. In the process, don’t forget to allow yourself the time and space to be a learner. If you need some help in your journey, please do not hesitate to contact me, I want to help."

Dr. Matthew Merritt's indomitable spirit and commitment to fostering a new era of educators are reshaping the landscape of education, ensuring that future generations will carry the torch of knowledge and inspiration forward.
