In a quiet, sunlit room at Assumption University (AU) in Bangkok, we had the privilege of conversing with Sister Jancy Paul, a remarkable individual whose life story is a union of academic rigor, compassion, and untiring service. Originally from Kerala, India, Sister Jancy brings 26 years of devotion as a member of the Sacred Heart congregation into her recent academic and humanitarian achievements. AU takes great pride in having facilitated her academic journey, culminating in a Ph.D. in Psychology and Counseling.

A Lifelong Learner"At Assumption University, every moment was memorable," Sister Jancy warmly recalls, especially appreciating her advisor, Dr. Parvathy Varma. "The Brothers who provided me with admission were very caring. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they and my teachers were like a family to me."

Bridging Mindfulness and Resilience
Sister Jancy's pioneering research in Kerala delves into the role of mindfulness and social support in psychological well-being among nurses. "Mindfulness and resilience are not just abstract terms but vital tools," she explains. "Kerala faces constant challenges like work-related stress and natural calamities. Mindfulness techniques and building community resilience can significantly improve mental health."

Making a Difference on the Ground
After her master's in 2012, Sister Jancy went on to establish counseling centers in Kerala, focusing on school-based programs, awareness initiatives, and workshops. "We've been able to achieve our objectives, targeting various groups like parents, teachers, doctors, and teenagers," she asserts.

Breaking the Stigma
However, challenges persist. "In Kerala, there's a stigma associated with seeking mental help," she remarks. Sister Jancy emphasizes that psychological and psychiatric problems require different treatments, and urges everyone to seek help as they would for a physical ailment. "Don't hesitate. We have solutions through counseling, psychotherapy, and medication."

Guided by Faith
Her journey as a member of the Sacred Heart congregation has been a cornerstone in her mission. "The congregation identified my talents and encouraged me to develop in unique ways," Sister Jancy expresses with gratitude.

The Road Ahead
When asked about her future aspirations, Sister Jancy is already looking ahead. "Now we focus mainly on people above 9 years old. I'd like to explore programs for kids under 9, especially involving art therapy."

Sister Jancy's work and vision echo the values and mission of Assumption University. As she continues her endeavors, AU will undoubtedly be watching, knowing that wherever she goes, positive change is sure to follow.

Assumption University is honored to spotlight Sister Jancy Paul, a woman who truly believes that by applying the principles of mindfulness, resilience, and social support, we can make the world a better place, one step at a time.
