Mr. Glen Chatelier, Director of the Office of International Affairs

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the President of Assumption University, let me welcome you to this special workshop on capacity training in computer online teaching and learning systems for Assumption University Faculty and Staff.

In October 2020 the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia with its regional office in Hong Kong invited member institutions in Asia to submit project proposals for the COVID 19 Pandemic Mitigation fund to support training in computer online teaching and learning systems.

The President of our University requested my office to co-ordinate our response to the call for projects and in spite of having sent the invitation to all faculties and units, we had received none. With the deadline approaching October 30, 2020, I called the VP for ITS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pratit Santiprabhob who told me that he and Ajarn Tapanan Yeophantong would submit a proposal. On October 29, in the afternoon we received the project proposal and our President approved the project before we sent it to United Board within the deadline.

On November 1, 2020 we received the result that Assumption University of Thailand was one of the few institutions which was awarded the support fund and the President then assigned Dr. Vindhai Cocracul as VP for Academic Affairs to oversee the implementation.

I was personally impressed with the work of the young expert Aj. Tapanan and I am pleased that today the workshop can take place. The Faculty of Science and Technology has conducted many workshops on and off campus. I thank Aj. Tapanan for his leadership at this workshop.

Assumption University is an International institution which has enjoyed the favor and encouragement of the country to impart its education and training. We on the other hand have to be prepared for emergencies like what the COVID 19 pandemic has challenged us. We need to improve our capacities in online teaching and learning systems. I am happy that as many of you from many diverse backgrounds and knowledge capacities have responded to the invitation to be trained.

Our students as learners feel lonely under the online teaching and learning system, as I had learned from them through a recent audit with the Faculty of Architecture. I do hope that you will take good care of them by teaching them well and training them as well.

I wish the workshop every success. Thank you for your attention.

The United Board Brief History with Assumption University of Thailand

The United Board for Christian Higher Education was first set up in 1922 to aid the far East Asian Christian Colleges and Universities in capacity building for faculty and staff. The early UB program in China was the Oberlin College-Shansi (XianXi) Exchange program which included Japan. In the 1980s the UBCHEA regional office was established in Hong Kong.

The United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA) has been in collaboration with Assumption University of Thailand since 2002 when the then President Rev. Bro. Dr. Prathip Martin Komolmas entered into an agreement with UBCHEA that its sponsored scholars would be trained at Master and Doctor degree levels at Assumption University, under a collaborative scholarships program.

UBCHEA sponsors scholars from Tertiary level institutions in South East Asia to upgrade their degree qualifications so as to empower them as future leaders of institutions. UB Scholars as they are known have thus far attended degree programs in ELT, Education, Computer Sciences and Technology and Organization Development. Currently Assumption University hosts seven Scholars for their studies.

Other programs that UBCHEA offers are the fellows program for Mid to top level administrators from South east, North East and South Asia, Workshops on Whole person Education and capacity building. Currently, the UB has sponsored the COVID 19 Online computer training program for Assumption University faculty and staff. The special program is hosted by the Vincent Mary School of Science and Technology.
