On September 22, 2023 - Thomas Aquinas School of Law in cooperation with the Asian Law Students Association of Assumption University (ALSA AU), sponsored by Select Tuna, hosted the highly anticipated "ALSA AU Legal Debate Competition 2023", bringing more than 80 freshmen together who have budding legal minds to engage in thought-provoking discussions on two contentious topics: "Should Sex Workers be a Lawful Career?" and "Should Gambling be Legalized in Thailand?"

The event, held at the Salle d' Expo room of Assumption University, Hua Mak Campus witnessed an impressive turnout of 16 teams of law students and lecturers aiming at fostering critical thinking and encouraging spirited debates on pressing legal issues, the competition showcased the intellectual prowess of the participants.

The first round of debates revolved around the topic of whether sex work should be considered a lawful career. This contentious issue sparked passionate arguments from both sides, with participants delving into the complexities of legalizing and regulating the industry. The discussions touched upon issues of human rights, public health, and social morality.

For another topic, in another room, contestants debated the potential legalization of gambling in Thailand. The discourse included considerations of economic benefits, social consequences, and ethical implications of such a move. Participants presented well-researched arguments, drawing on international examples and local perspectives to make their cases.

In the final round, the debate's topic "Should alcoholics deserve the same rights to liver transplants as normal patients?" provoked passionate discussions on the rights, responsibilities, and ethical considerations associated with allocating life-saving medical resources the same rights to liver transplants with a history of alcohol abuse.

The judges, consisting of the School of Law lecturers who are experienced legal scholars and practitioners, praised the participants for their eloquence, research skills, and ability to engage in respectful and enlightening debates on these sensitive topics.
