Khao Phansa or 'Buddhist Lent' was recently observed by AU administrators, students, and staff

(Bangbo District, July 27, 2023) - A special event in observance of Khao Phansa or 'Buddhist Lent' was successfully held yesterday, July 26, organized by the Office of Thai Arts and Culture. This significant cultural event was led by Mr. Sorana Arunrat, Dean of Student Affairs.

In an effort to ensure the continuation of traditional practices and promote the appreciation of Thai cultural values, faculty, staff, and students came together in a remarkable display of unity. This merit-making ceremony, a vital part of the observance, saw the University group present a beautifully carved candle, among other necessities, to the monks of the Sukhunthawat Temple located in Bangbo District.

Buddhist Lent Day, observed during the rainy season, is a period of time when monks are expected to remain within the confines of their respective temples. This time is reserved for religious study, introspection, and meditation, serving also as a period of religious instruction for new novices. It has been a long-standing tradition for Buddhists to make offerings of large candles to the monks during this season, symbolizing the illumination of wisdom dispelling the darkness of ignorance.

The Office of Thai Arts and Culture is fully committed to promoting and preserving these Thai traditions within our University community. As part of the day's activities, a ceremonial Alms Giving was held. According to Thai tradition and culture, giving alms to monks is a religious act of faith, signifying humility, detachment, and generosity in a secular world. This particular practice reminds us of the importance of not succumbing to greed and selfishness, but rather to embody the values of sharing and generosity.
