Assumption University Pays Tribute to King Chulalongkorn

AU executives, faculty, staff, and students joined the nation in honoring the Great Beloved King at Bangkok’s Royal Plaza.

Assumption University of Thailand (AU) joined the nation in honoring the legacy of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn the Great (King Rama V) on October 23, 2026, as University representatives laid wreaths at the Equestrian Statue of King Chulalongkorn at the Royal Plaza in Bangkok.

The delegation, comprising University executives, faculty members, staff, and students, participated in the annual observance of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Day, also known as Piyamaharaj Day, marking the 116th anniversary of His Majesty’s passing.

Honoring the Great Beloved King

Revered as the Great Beloved King, King Chulalongkorn reigned from 1868 to 1910 and is remembered as one of the most influential monarchs in Thailand’s history.

His Majesty’s reign marked a period of remarkable national transformation, including the peaceful abolition of slavery, modernization of public administration, development of transportation and infrastructure, and expansion of education. These reforms helped establish the foundations of modern Thailand while safeguarding the Kingdom’s independence during an era of colonial expansion across Southeast Asia.

Of particular significance to Assumption University and Thailand’s academic community was His Majesty’s commitment to education. The establishment and expansion of formal educational institutions under King Chulalongkorn helped create opportunities for future generations and contributed to the development of the nation’s modern education system.

A Legacy Remembered Across Generations

Observed annually on October 23, Piyamaharaj Day remains an important national occasion for remembering His Majesty’s extraordinary contributions to the Kingdom and the well-being of the Thai people.

Through its participation in the commemorative wreath-laying ceremony, Assumption University expressed its profound respect and gratitude for His Majesty’s enduring legacy while reaffirming the University’s appreciation of Thailand’s rich history, cultural heritage, and the transformative power of education.
