Assumption University of Thailand (AU) proudly welcomed students and faculty from the University of California, Davis for the Summer Abroad Program 2025, themed “Microbiology Lab in the Kingdom of Smiles”. Held on June 21, 2025, at Salle d’ Expo, Hua Mak Campus, the orientation brought fresh energy and familiar faces to campus. We love when the Aggies return! UC Davis has been a cherished academic partner of AU for many years, and this summer’s program once again reflects our shared commitment to global learning, scientific innovation, and lasting cross-cultural friendships.
Founded in 1905 as the University Farm, an extension of UC Berkeley, UC Davis is now one of the top public universities in the United States, known worldwide for excellence in life sciences, agriculture, sustainability, and innovation. Its students are proudly known as Aggies, a nod to the university’s agricultural roots—which have since expanded into cutting-edge research across fields ranging from medicine to microbiology.

The day began with a warm welcome from Rev. Bro. Sirichai Fonseka, f.s.g., Ph.D., President of AU, followed by remarks from Asst. Prof. Dr. Patchanee Yasurin, Dean of the Theophane Venard School of Biotechnology. Attendees also enjoyed interactive activities and an introduction to Thai culture.

A highlight of the orientation was the academic overview delivered by Prof. Dr. Glenn M. Young, a globally respected microbiologist from UC Davis. A brilliant scientist and passionate educator, Dr. Young has played a key role in building bridges between California and Thailand. He personally introduced the UC Davis students to the Land of Smiles, setting the tone for a journey of discovery—both in the lab and in life.
“Thanks to Dr. Young and the UC Davis students for visiting our campus”, said River, a second-year student who joined the orientation. “One day, I dream of walking the campus at UC Davis myself. This experience brought me closer to that goal—and reminded me why I love science in the first place.”
With leaders like Dr. Young guiding the program, students can look forward to a summer filled with hands-on scientific discovery and meaningful cultural exchange.
Welcome back, Aggies—you bring knowledge, curiosity, and a whole lot of heart to the Land of Smiles!
