Filipino Student Wins Top Prize at World Peace Ethics Contest, Aims to Boost MSMEs in the Philippines

Mr. Thimothy James Capiz, a 2^nd-year Filipino student, from Martin de Tours School of Management and Economics, brought home the top prize at the Annual World Peace Ethics Contest (WPEC)

We would like to take this opportunity to shine the spotlight on a remarkable young Filipino student studying at Assumption University of Thailand.

Mr. Thimothy James Capiz, a 2^nd-year Filipino student, from Martin de Tours School of Management and Economics, brought home the top prize and received a Certificate of Excellence and the THB 10,000 cash prize at the 2023 World Peace Ethics Contest. Thimothy is currently studying Business Administration at The Martin de Tours School of Management and Economics, Assumption University, Thailand. Last year, he was busy learning core business courses integral to any finance student that covered important topics in business like initial exposure, business exploration, data and information literacy, ethics, law, mathematics, accounting, and sustainability.

Thimothy’s always been interested in how money works, ever since he realized money doesn’t grow on trees. Being originally from the Philippines, he has seen the importance of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in developing the country's economy. “MSME comprise approximately 99% of businesses in the archipelago, I plan on contributing to this driving force and pushing the way for the reemergence of economic growth in the Philippines, a Tiger Cub economy.”, said Thimothy.

From 4 to 8 years old, Thimothy was formally home-schooled, which he credits for helping him to develop good study habits at an early age. Then he went to an international school for 3 years, transferred to a Filipino institution for 2 more, and finished high school in a Thai Education Hub International Programme. In 2022, he began his studies at Assumption University, focusing on Business Administration.

Thimothy likes the environment and the people at Assumption University, saying, “It’s a great place to work and learn because there are no distractions and every day I just have to go to class and educate myself with like-minded students.”

If Thimothy could go back in time 10 years, to give himself advice, he said he would encourage himself “to go play and enjoy childhood more, since it’s a short but sweet time to go and explore what I’m interested in and what I enjoy doing.”

In his free time, he likes to play basketball and other sports, like ping pong and badminton. When not out and about, you may catch him online, scrolling and surfing the Web for hours on end. He also likes to jam with his guitar and sing songs by himself.

Family values, just like in the book Family Day by Day, are important to him since he comes from a strong family background with a loving father and mother, brother, and sister, Thimothy says, “ We’re always here for one another”. If there was a book about his life, he says the title of the book might be A Complete Family.

On many Sundays, you may find Thimothy celebrating mass in the chapel of the Father Ray Foundation, in Pattaya, called The Redemptorist Chapel. Thimothy serves in the Music Ministry, playing the guitar. When not in Pattaya, he serves as an acolyte in the Saint Louis Marie De Montfort Chapel, at Assumption University, Suvarnabhumi campus. He is also an active member of a Catholic lay Youth ministry, called Missionary Families of Christ.

Thimothy shared an inspirational passage by Marianne Williamson that serves as a timely reminder to be our best selves. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate,” Williamson writes in A Return to Love. “Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world.”

Thimothy’s ten-year plan is to “be out and working, developing much-needed skills while also gaining personal growth.” In twenty years, he hopes to be planning for retirement, and finding a nice and comfortable place to call home. And, in forty years, he sees himself relaxing at home with family and friends, taking the time to detox and to go on retreats.
