The English Language Teaching Department at Assumption University of Thailand (AU)‘s Graduate School of Human Sciences successfully conducted a Professional Development Seminar on "Ecostylistics—and the Positioning of Ecolinguistics" on February 28, 2024. The event, held from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, featured Honorary Professor Andrew Peter Goatly from Lingnan University's English Department as the distinguished speaker.

Prof. Goatly, with an illustrious career spanning across various countries including Singapore, Thailand, Rwanda, and Austria, shared his profound insights into the interdisciplinary field of Ecostylistics. This innovative approach merges ecology and linguistics to analyze literature, incorporating stylistic elements to explore ecological themes in works like Manley Hopkins' "As Kingfishers Catch Fire" and Alice Oswall's "Birdsong for Two Voices."

The seminar delved into the implications of Ecostylistics for linguistics, philosophy, and sciences, emphasizing the celebration of diversity in biology, metaphor, and language. Prof. Goatly highlighted the interconnected processes as a fundamental reality, advocating for compassionate observation, listening, and response to the environment through metaphors and linguistic structures.

The event was a resounding success, attracting faculty members, students, and alumni of the Graduate School of Human Sciences. It provided a platform for engaging discussions and a deeper understanding of the relationship between language and ecology, reinforcing AU's commitment to fostering academic excellence and professional development.
