National Day of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, 2 DecemberLaos, officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic. Laos is the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia. At the heart of the Indochinese Peninsula, Laos is bordered by Myanmar and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the southeast, and Thailand to the west and southwest. Its capital and largest city is Vientiane.

The first modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens) arrived in Southeast Asia around 50,000 years ago. Their stone-age technology remained little changed until a new Neolithic culture evolved about 10,000 years ago. This was the Hoabinhian, named after an archaeological site in northern Vietnam Hoabinhian hunter-gatherers spread throughout much of Southeast Asia, including Laos.Their descendants produced the first pottery in the region, and later bronze metallurgy.

In time they supplemented their hunting, fishing and gathering by horticulture and eventually rice cultivation, introduced down the Mekong River valley from southern China. These people were the ancestors of the present-day upland minorities, collectively know as the Lao Thoeng (Upland Lao), the largest group of which are the Khamu of northern Laos.

National Day of the Lao People's Democratic RepublicBy the twentieth century, Lao had become a French protectorate. Following the end of World War II, resistance to French control grew and the Pathet Lao resistance organisation was formed by the Indochinese Communist Party. The armed struggle against occupation was known as the First Indochina War, and it resulted in Lao gaining independence as a constitutional monarchy under King Sisavang Phoulivong in October 1953.

The opposing views of the Pathet La and the royalist forces led to a long civil war in Lao. In 1975, with the support of North Vietnam and the Soviet Union, the Pathet Lao gained the upper hand in the conflict and on 2 December 1975, they overthrew the royalist Lao government and forced King Savang Vatthana to abdicate. On the same day, he Pathet Lao government under Kaysone Phomvihane renamed the country as the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

National Day is a public holiday in Laos, observed on 2nd December.
