Assumption University is thrilled to announce the upcoming Loy Krathong celebration, organized by the Assumption University Student Organization (AUSO). This enchanting event will be held at our Suvarnabhumi Campus, and we warmly invite the entire AU community, including students, faculty, and staff, to join us in this beautiful tradition.
Loy Krathong: A Time-Honored Tradition
Loy Krathong, a ceremony to honor the Goddess of the river, is one of Thailand's most important religious customs. Celebrated annually on the full moon day in November, it marks the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the cooler weather. During Loy Krathong, participants release Krathongs, small vessels made of banana stems and leaves adorned with flowers, candles, and joss sticks, into the rivers. This act symbolizes asking forgiveness from the Goddess for polluting her waters. It’s a time for rejoicing, reflection, and embracing the brighter weather and the year's brightest moon.
Exciting Festivities at AU
Our celebration starts at 4:45 PM with a captivating drum performance, leading our AU administrators and the contestants in the Noppamas Queen contest through a procession filled with color and vibrancy. The highlight of the evening is the Loy Krathong ritual, where everyone can release their Krathongs into the water, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of light and serenity.
Honoring Nang Noppamas
The festival also pays tribute to Nang Noppamas, a figure from the Sukhothai Kingdom, believed to have started the Loy Krathong Festival. Her creativity and spirit continue to inspire the beauty and elegance of this festival.
