AU Songkran Festival 2021

Thailand’s most famous annual Songkran festival marking the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year was as usual celebrated at Assumption University of Thailand, Suvarnabhumi Campus. However, this year’s festivity taking place on April 8, 2021, was simply carried out with only the essentially basic rituals to preserve or maintain the traditional or cultural aspects.



On this celebrative occasion, the AU Rector delivered his blessing remarks to all the celebrants who were clad in colorful or traditional attires and other forms of national dresses or costumes in order to preserve the uniqueness of the local Thai textiles or fabrics.

A group of the University’s top management members, administrators, members of the faculty, staff and students congregated at the elegant Thai style pavilion (Sala Jaturamookpaichitr) to pay respect to the revered Rev. Bro. Dr. Bancha Saenghiran, AU President – Rector Magnificus and other senior executives by pouring scented water on their hands for Songkran blessings.

As the major Catholic and the first International University in Thailand, Assumption University of Thailand has preserved, maintained; celebrating all the major Thai cultural festivals for all local and foreign community members to enjoy, learn and appreciate the valuable Thai cultures.

Thus, the major cultural festivals are annually performed at the University’s premises not only to the preserve country’s cultural values & precious traditions but also to entertain, impress, educate and instill in the local as well as the more than 2000 international students and foreign lecturers the Thai cultural appreciation & understanding.

Songkran : the Thai Traditional New Year

Songkran Day is a national holiday and an occasion for family reunion. Young Thais wherever they are will do their best in order to be with their folks on Songkran Day, In Bangkok where a large proportion of dwellers come from outlying provinces, the city on Songkran Day assumes the appearance of a deserted city.

For the Thais who are Buddhists, the day begins with merit making in remembrance of departed souls, Birds and fish are set free. Later in the day, they visit their elders for anointment rite, The elders in return wish the youngsters good health, longevity and prosperity. In many provinces the main Buddha image is towed in procession around the area.

AU Songkran Celebration 1992 organized from 15 to 16 April 1992 at second floor Assumption Hall, Hua Mak campus, Assumption University.
