“English for All”: A Space for Practice, Connection, and Confidence Beyond the Classroom

WRITER: PIYA SAILOMRAKSA

Launched in 2008, the “English for All” program has served as a key initiative to promote active English language use among first-year students at Assumption University of Thailand (AU). Now in its 18th year, the program was originally designed to provide students with opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in real-world contexts, under the guidance of senior student mentors and faculty members. It reflects the institution’s ongoing commitment to experiential learning, communicative competence, and student-centered support.

In the current academic year, the program introduced a new initiative known as the “English Forum” – a series of small-group English workshops held on Friday afternoons. These sessions are designed to provide a welcoming, low-pressure environment where students can engage in English language activities while developing practical skills and critical thinking.

Three sessions have been successfully conducted so far:

June 20: Business Conversation
June 27: Introduction to English Pronunciation
July 4: Career Planning

These forums attracted a total of 74 participants from various faculties, demonstrating a strong interest in developing English language proficiency beyond formal classroom settings.

Beyond language practice, “English for All” also aims to foster a sense of academic community by connecting first-year students with their senior peers, who serve as informal mentors. These peer mentors provide support in academic adjustment, study techniques, and personal guidance, helping new students feel less isolated and more empowered in their transition to university life.

Notably, the program is offered free of charge, with generous support from the Office of Student Affairs at AU. Its accessibility, inclusivity, and consistent commitment to student growth have made it a valued part of the university’s co-curricular landscape.

Over the past 18 years, “English for All” has not only nurtured English language development but has also contributed to building a campus culture grounded in collaboration, compassion, and lifelong learning.
