AU School of Music Showcases Gypsy Jazz Tribute at MHESI Royal Concert

Louis Nobiron School of Music, Assumption University of Thailand (AU)  was honored to be invited by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) to participate in the national musical tribute “H.M. Song in the Park: Songs of Our Father”, held in December 2025 to commemorate and honor Thailand’s beloved monarchs.

ABAC School of Music performed on 6 December 2025 at Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park, Bangkok, as part of the three-day concert series organized by MHESI from 5–7 December 2025, between 5:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The event was held simultaneously in Bangkok and across regional higher education institutions nationwide, drawing a large audience of Thai and international attendees.

The concert series was organized to honor the late His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, revered as a supreme artist with extraordinary musical genius, while also paying tribute to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, and honoring His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua. According to Mr. Ekapong Musigacharoen, Director of the Division of Science, Research and Innovation Promotion and Coordination, Office of the Permanent Secretary, MHESI, the event received an overwhelmingly positive response from the public, who gathered to enjoy royal compositions, musical performances, exhibitions, and creative workshops throughout the celebration.

In this prestigious setting, the AU School of Music ensemble distinguished itself by presenting royal compositions in the style of Gypsy Jazz—a genre with a strong and unmistakable musical identity. This creative interpretation offered audiences a fresh yet respectful perspective on His Majesty’s compositions, demonstrating their timeless quality and adaptability across musical styles.

The ensemble was formed through a unique collaboration of alumni, current students, and faculty members of the School of Music, reflecting AU’s strong sense of community and continuity across generations. This intergenerational ensemble not only enriched the musical performance but also embodied the School’s educational philosophy of learning through practice, mentorship, and artistic collaboration.

Gypsy Jazz, also known as Jazz Manouche, originated in Europe in the 1930s and is closely associated with legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt. The genre is characterized by acoustic string instruments, driving swing rhythms, intricate melodic improvisation, and the distinctive use of rhythmic guitar techniques in place of percussion. By blending elements of traditional jazz with Romani musical influences, Gypsy Jazz creates an energetic yet elegant sound that is both intimate and instantly recognizable.

By interpreting royal compositions through the Gypsy Jazz tradition, the AU School of Music demonstrated artistic creativity while maintaining cultural sensitivity and deep respect for the original works. The performance highlighted the School’s commitment to preserving Thailand’s musical heritage while encouraging innovation, and reaffirmed its role as an active contributor to national cultural and royal commemorative events through music.
