The Montfort del Rosario School of Architecture and Design at Assumption University of Thailand (AAU) proudly presents “Design Up+Rising”, an academic exhibition program that is part of Bangkok Design Week 2025. Under the theme “A MAT-TER OF TIME: Reinterpreting the Old into the New”, the exhibition features installation art, design showcases, and insightful discussions, fostering a creative dialogue between history and contemporary design.

Curated by Ms. Ornla-or Homsethee, a lecturer in the Department of Interior Architecture, this exhibition provides a platform for students to showcase their innovative design projects while engaging with the urban landscape. Now in its fifth consecutive year of participation in Bangkok Design Week, the program integrates real-world experience into academic learning through the class IN2308: Furniture Design, where students develop exceptional design concepts with the potential for real-world production.

The exhibition pursues three key objectives: fostering collaboration, driving innovation, and building networks. It provides a platform for student designers to engage with external organizations, presenting their work within contemporary design discourse. This experience enhances their practical skills while encouraging critical dialogue on emerging trends.

By bridging academia and the commercial design industry, the exhibition promotes design innovation and cross-sector collaboration, contributing to the field’s evolution. Additionally, it strengthens academic and professional networks, enabling knowledge exchange between students and industry professionals, fostering growth in the creative economy.

This year, five selected student works were brought to life through industry collaboration, featuring designs by:

  • Mr. Passakorn Nivesrungsan
  • Ms. Kaneta Tillanil
  • Ms. Pattama Au-Arrenusorn
  • Mr. Por An Be
  • Ms. Sut Nu Pan

These projects are supported by leading furniture brands and designers, including MATER, QURV, KOCHUU, TANYARIN, and HOMEWORK FABRIC.

Aligned with the theme of reinterpreting the old and new, the immersive exhibition was held at Baan Wangderm Hotel, a boutique hotel in Bangkok Yai District known for its chic ambiance and popularity among young travelers. The exhibition was made possible through the collaboration of Ms. Piyanat Dabbhasuta, who supervised the site, and Ms. Peeraanong Wongtanakornchai, who designed the lighting. Both are lecturers in the Department of Interior Architecture. Their contributions enhanced the exhibition, creating a truly immersive experience.

As part of the program, a special talk, based on an academic research, titled “Semiotics of Style: Decoding Timeless Charms in Furniture Branding” was delivered by Asst. Prof. Chutarat Laomanacharoen, lecturer in the Department of Multidisciplinary Design at AAU. The session explored the aesthetic and cultural significance of furniture design through the lens of embodied cognition and semiotics.
