History of National Teachers’ Day

Teachers’ Day was first held on 16 January 1957 due to the announcement of the Teachers Act in the Royal Gazette in 1945,regulating the Ministry of Education to have a council called "Teachers Council" with the status of being legal entity. All teachers are members of the council which has main duties in the field of professional teaching institutions, providing comments on education policies and general education subjects to the Ministry of Education, providing reasonable welfare for teachers and families, and promoting knowledge and unity among teachers.

Appreciating Our Guides for Life: Teachers’ Day in Thailand

The Thai National Teachers’ Day is celebrated each year in January. On this day, students go out of their way to show their teachers . “khwaam khao-róp” or “respect.” General Phiboonsongkram first suggested the creation of Teachers’ Day as a national commemoration. The first celebration took place the next year in 1957.

The celebration of the importance of teachers is rooted in the belief that teachers are some of the most valuable contributors to society, and as such, deserve to be recognized and appreciated for their devotion. This extends not only to school teachers, but to teachers in any field of life, and elders in society.

Teachers guide students to their destinations and continue to do so even beyond when students have completed their studies. Teachers are seen as a path to the future.

Happy Teachers’ Day

As a Catholic International tertiary level institution, Assumption University of Thailand has the icon of Jesu Magister, Christ the Teacher adjacent the Chapel of St. Louis Marie de Montfort at the Suvaranabhumi Campus. The symbolic value of the statue is to remind all lecturers and those who serve at the University that our role is to serve as guides to our students as they come to us to discover their talents through gaining knowledge. As guides we are called to sacrifice so that we truly deserve the respect that students give us. We are the lights to guide our students, Let Our lights shine on Teacher’s Day.
