In a world where individuals are constantly bombarded with information, having the right tools to process and understand this data can make all the difference. On August 23, 2024, student representatives from the Graduate School of Business & Advanced Technology Management attended a special talk titled “How AI is Used in Stock Trading and News” at SET FinLab, the Stock Exchange of Thailand. The session was led by Mr. Lee J. Miller, Bloomberg Editor-at-Large and Professor at Tsinghua University.

During his presentation, Mr. Miller demonstrated how AI has been seamlessly integrated into various functions at Bloomberg, engaging the audience with examples from the Bloomberg terminal.

Key takeaways from the session include:

  • Real-time Data Monitoring: Bloomberg monitors market data and news from multiple sources, such as news articles, research documents, and earnings calls, in real time. With the help of AI algorithms, Bloomberg screens, analyzes, and categorizes information into themes, identifying key words and sentiment.
  • Streamlining Analysis: AI-powered tools at Bloomberg enable faster and more accurate fundamental analysis. For instance, AI can quickly scan financial statements to highlight key points, allowing analysts to focus on strategic decision-making. Sentiment analysis also allows traders and investors to align news events with security price movements, enhancing their ability to gauge market psychology and make informed trading decisions.
  • Partnerships and Innovations: Bloomberg's collaboration with platforms like X ensures a comprehensive feed of market-related information. Continuous development of Bloomberg’s functionality aims to deliver cutting-edge solutions tailored to customer needs.

Mr. Miller concluded by emphasizing the importance of simplifying data to its most critical components and returning to the basics. While data is abundant, the key lies in the user's ability to prioritize and select relevant information to develop insightful ideas. In a technology-driven world, informed interpretation and decisive action on data are what truly set successful investors apart.

We sincerely thank the SET FinLab @ Maruay Library for hosting this insightful event and to Mr. Lee Miller for sharing his expertise and valuable insights on the role of AI in the financial industry. Such opportunities for learning and engagement are invaluable to our students and future entrepreneurs.
