WRITER: THEODORE MARIA SCHOOL OF ARTS

On March 27th, 2023, The Theodore Maria School of Arts held its first “live” faculty meeting since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020. It was a lively all-day affair attended by Arts faculty members. The event started with an opening address from the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Associate Professor Dr. Sureepong Phothongsunan. Then the morning session entitled, “Move the Class to the Cloud: The Pathway to Global Citizenship in the Next Normal,” was given by esteemed Assistant Professor, Dr. Pornpimol Sukavatee from the Faculty of Education at Chulalongkorn University. Her interactive presentation provided many insights on the future of language education and the many applications that are being used.

The afternoon session had two guest speakers starting with the topic: “Impacts of Technology on Language Teaching and Learning,” presented by Dr. Sumate Permwonguswa, Chairperson, Department of Digital Business Management, MSME. The theme of computer literacy and the fear of emerging technologies such as ChatGPT permeated his lecture as concerns were raised and discussed. The final guest speaker of the day, Dr. Ernest M. Seely, Assistant Director of Language Services and Standards for the IELE, led a spirited discussion on “Happiness vs. Motivation or Do You Have Both?” Faculty members were encouraged to reflect on their personal wellbeing while finding motivation in their work at Assumption University of Thailand (AU).

 
 

To finish the event, the Dean, Associate Professor Dr. Sureepong Phothongsunan presented awards to outstanding faculty members for their contributions to The Faculty of Arts. This was the first time such recognition has been given. The School of Arts wishes to encourage faculty engagement, support and collaboration to motivate all its members to improve teaching performance, conduct professional research and contribute in many ways to Assumption University of Thailand.

The Faculty of Arts also gave a special congratulations to its two new Assistant Professors, Dr. Chatsaran Chatsanguthai and Dr. Romain Benassaya. Dr. Chatsanguthai is the Chairperson of Business Chinese and Dr. Benassaya specializes in education for Business French.
