Africa has long been regarded as the cradle of humanity', and hominid ('humanlike') species are known to have inhabited the area now called Malawi, along with many other parts of East and Southern Africa, between three and two million years ago. The oldest hominid remnant found in Malawi is a single jawbone of the species Homo rudolfensis, which palaeontologists calculate to be 2.5 million years old.
Independence Day is a public holiday in Malawi observed on July 6th each year. Also known as Republic Day, this is Malawi's National Day and commemorates independence from Britain on this day in 1966.
