The Royal Coronation Ceremony is an important event in countries where the monarchy remains as the core institution, and this is especially true in the Kingdom of Thailand. In Thailand, the institution of the monarchy holds all the hearts and souls of the people together. The Royal Coronation Ceremony is the formal observance that reveals the glory of the King ascending to the throne, assures the country that he holds love for all his people, and accords recognition from the international community. Most importantly, it is a ceremony that demonstrates the stability and unity of the people as the Nation.

The day of 4 May marks the coronation anniversary of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, the tenth monarch of the Royal House of Chakri. The coronation of His Majesty King Rama X was performed on 4-6 May 2019.

On this occasion, he delivered a royal address encouraging everyone in the grand assembly, as well as all Thai people, to join him in showing their intention to perform their duties by upholding national interests, progress, and stability, as well as achieving the happiness of the people as the ultimate goal.

History of the Royal Coronation Ceremony

The Royal Coronation Ceremony is an ancient traditional royal practice performed since the Sukhothai period to complete the procedure of the enthronement of each King of Thailand. It has been upheld through the ages, but details have been modified as appropriate within the context of each period. The ceremony is a blend between Hindu, or Brahmin, and Buddhist practices.

In the Rattanakosin period, the Royal Coronation Ceremony has been performed 11 times, as follows:

  1. In the reign of King Buddha Yod Fa Chulalok (Rama I), the coronation ceremony was conducted twice; the first one in 1782, when the King founded the Royal House of Chakri, and the second one in 1785, when the construction of a group of pavilions for the Grand Palace was completed.   6. King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) performed his coronation twice. The first one was conducted on 11 November 1910. The King ordered the second Royal Coronation Ceremony to proceed on 2 December 1911, as a celebratory period for the nation and so that its international friends would have the opportunity to participate in the full ceremony.   10. The Coronation of King Rama X, to be held on 4-6 May 2019, will be the 12th Royal Coronation Ceremony in the Rattanakosin period, and the first coronation in the Kingdom of Thailand in seven decades. His Majesty King Rama X presented the First Royal Command on 4 May 2019:

    “We shall treasure, preserve, and build on our heritage and shall reign in righteousness for the great enduring good of the people.”

Celebrating the Royal Coronation Day, the following significant activities were organized by Assumption University in the pass year:

On April 29, 2019, Holy Mass Conducted in Honor of His Majesty the King on the Blessed Occasion of the “Royal Coronation Ceremony.” The holy mass, dedicated to H.M. King Maha Vajiralongkorn on the auspicious occasion of the approaching Royal Coronation Ceremony, was conducted at the AU grand Chapel of St. Louis Marie de Montfort, Suvarnabhumi Campus .

On May 8, 2019, Homage Paid to H.M. the King on the Occasion of the Royal Coronation Ceremony. On the grand and auspicious occasion of the Royal Coronation Ceremony of H.M. King Vajiralongkorn (King RAMA X), the AU community members comprising management team, administrators, faculty members, staff and students, all clad in yellow attire, congregated to pledge their love, profound respect and loyalty to His Majesty for his “Long, Happy and Prosperous Reign.”

Led by Rev. Bro. Dr. Bancha Saenghiran, AU President-Rector Magnificus, the following activities were performed:

Special Lecture on “The Royal Coronation Ceremony”

To significantly mark the approaching momentous “Royal Coronation Ceremony” of H.M. King Maha Vajiralongkorn, a very special lecture depicting the ancient, traditional and cultural heritage of the Thai customary royal practices, was organized at Assumption University. This valuable presentation clearly and interestingly presented in Thai at Suvarnabhumi Campus and in English at Hua Mak Campus respectively taking place on April 29, 2019 and April 30, 2019 attracted a full house of countless audience comprising AU administrators, faculty members, staff, students and interested individuals.

AU Blood Donation: A Tribute to the Coronation Ceremony of H.M. King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua

The charitable blood donation activity was recently organized by the AU Bernadette de Lourdes School of Nursing Science in collaboration with the Thai Red Cross Society. Gracing the occasion, Rev. Bro. Dr. Bancha Saenghiran, President-Rector Magnificus, extended the moral supports to blood donors which included faculty members, staff and students.
