Experiences:

May 1990-December 1990 Researcher

Teijin Research and Development Center, Yokohama city, Japan.
Workstation - Mainframe link research
Experiences in coding simulation programs in the C language. The programs simulate and mathematically analyze queuing networks. Established the link between the R&D center, based in Yokohama, and the head office, based in Osaka. Used a UNIX workstation as a gateway to emulate a 3270 terminal at the center in Yokohama. This enabled anyone to access and log in to the mainframe from a remote emulated terminal in the center via a leased line. Provided users in the center with a Japanese language interface environment, allowing them to either input Japanese characters and transmit them to be stored in the mainframe DB or vice versa. The key idea was to build a conversion table for the emulated terminal using the C language.

December 1990-April 1993 System Programmer

Thai Airways International, Bangkok, Thailand.
Satellite Communication for Aircraft
An aircraft could not communicate with ground stations while flying over oceanic areas. Almost 70% of Thai aircraft routes are over the ocean, making satellite communication necessary to overcome this limitation. I have been involved in a project called Future Satellite Communication on Aircraft since I first joined Thai Airways in 1990. During that time, the working group and I conducted a feasibility study. After evaluating the study and presenting our findings to the committee, the project was subsequently approved.

Firstly, I was sent to train at the SITA education center located in France, where I learned the following topics.

- Aircom service characteristics.

- Aircom architecture.

- Aeronuatical mobile satellite communications environment and the principles of satellite communications.

- Various systems architecture, formats and protocols.

- Aircom satellite service and the various functions, systems, equipment and protocols used.

I also had an experience of computing the trade-off between VHF communication cost and satellite communication cost while simulating the aircraft routes based on cost-effective analysis.

During my next visit to the Engineering Department of British Airways, located near Heathrow Airport in London, I spent a week and gained a better understanding of the following points.

- Marketing strategy why British Airways have to make use of satellite communication.

- Advantages and drawbacks of the system.

- Capital acquisition.

- Ground software implementation.

- On board passenger telephony system.

I have also visited Inmarsat, an international organization responsible for operating and controlling four satellites (POR, AOR-E, AOR-W, and IOR) for aeronautical services. During my visit, I witnessed a demonstration where an officer attempted to recover the Inmarsat-Aero satellite from deviating from its regular orbit. Additionally, I observed a demonstration of multi-hop satellite communication.

Inmarsat is a multinational consortium, and CAT is a new member of the organization. I used to represent Thai Airways and participate in the CAMSS14 (Committee of Aeronautical Mobile Satellite Services) conference organized by SITA in Bangkok.

User Interface Programming on Mainframe
To code JCL can be a tedious and boring task for our programmers when working on the mainframe. Drawing on my experience with the MVS system, TSO, IMS, and JCL, I participated in a project aimed at assisting these programmers by automatically generating JCL for them. By utilizing CLIST and implementing a menu-driven style, the user interface utility helped improve users' productivity and morale. We referred to this system as the 'Library System'.
