Address by the President - Rector Magnificus
of Assumption University of Thailand
at the Wai Kru Ceremony 2022
on Thursday, July 21, 2022

All the administrators of AU
Faculty, staff, and students,
Representative of AUAA,
President of AUSO and
Dear Students.

  1. Welcome all of you, both faculty and students, to this Wai Kru ceremony for academic year 2022. For academic year 2020, if you can recall, due to the severity of Covid-19 pandemic, the ceremony took place only with a small selected few. This year, the preventive measure against the infection has been relaxed so that AUSO decided to follow the beautiful tradition of Wai Kru ceremony.

  2. On behalf of the faculty members, I accept the homage and respect accorded to us all. We formally accept you to be AU students and become members of AU family with all rights and privileges thereof.
         - For the first year students, I welcome you to this new-found family.

  3. Permit me to reiterate the meaning, the core values of Wai Kru.
         - Wai Kru ceremony should precede the teaching and learning. Two things have to be considered, namely, the externalities – what can be visualized, and the internalities - the inner values that can draw from the externalities.

  4. Representatives of students advance to offer beautiful bouquets of flowers and pay respect to the teachers. By this action and with humility students request teachers to accept them as their students while promising to work hard, to pay attention to studies, to obey and follow their advices. Whatever demands put forward, students are ready to follow for their own benefits. In the spirit of trust, confidence and respect in their faculty, they will do their utmost and whatever in their power to pursue Truth and Knowledge, Wisdom and Virtues. In the process of learning, such disposition of trust, confidence and respect are essential to personal growth from within and development can take place and flourish in this regard.

  5. On the other hand, by accepting you as their students, it implies that the faculty undertake the responsibility to educate you and prepare you to face the world. They faculty profess to commit to teaching profession, to be your mentors, and to be patient and tolerant in all situations. Therefore, success of learning and teaching depends very much on commitment, cooperation and collaboration of the two parties.

  6. Dear student:
College life is a time to learn and to act independently. You are free to make your personal choices but you have to remain accountable to the outcomes. You have to prepare yourselves for the fast changing and turbulent world. Do not lose sight of your goals and while facing difficulties, do not be disheartened. Rather, consider them to be your sources of refinement and growth.

  7. On this occasion, you will witness good examples of the recipients of the Awards of Excellence in academic performances of the past year. Learn from them, try to excel them. Your life on campus will be worthwhile if you spend your time wisely and make it years of formation through different experiences. Do engage with people and environments on campus.
         - There will also be a formal appointment of the members of Assumption University Student Organization (AUSO) through “Pin Decoration.” They volunteer to work for AU students. They act as “spices of life” that add flavor and make academic life enjoyable through multi-dimensional activities, they contribute greatly to your personal growth and development. We are thankful to the members of AUSO for the sacrifice and commitment to the task.

  8. May the spirit of “Wai Kru” live on in both our teaching and learning, in our daily engagement, so that each one will grow and develop to the full. Allow me to thank the administrators, faculty and staff who are present here to honor our students. I would like to thank also those who help make this event a meaningful one. This includes members of Student Affairs, Administrative Affairs, Alumni Association, and Student Organization.

  9. I pray that God will grant you strength and courage to overcome all difficulties that may come your way. May He bless all who teach and all who learn. May your minds be always open to the Truth and Knowledge with humility.

Thank you!
