Three junior nursing students; Mr. Rachanon Sakol, Mr. Rachata Yangyuenvanissakun, and Ms. Tussanawan Putponthip from the Bernadette de Lourdes School of Nursing Science, Assumption University of Thailand, received the winning award in the National Online Social Media and Innovation Contest. The theme of the contest is “The Mainstay of Nursing Student Club Creating a Smoke Free Society: A Challenging Role in the 21 Century. It aimed at Curbing Electronic Cigarette Use and Preventing NON-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) caused by Cigarette Smoking”. The contest was organized by Nurse Network on Tobacco Control of Thailand, The Nurses’ Association of Thailand, and Thai Health Promotion Foundation.

There are two types of the contests consisting of 1) Curbing Electronic Cigarette Use Campaign and 2) Preventing NCDs caused by Cigarette Smoking Campaign in which AU nursing students received the winning award from the VDO Clip entitled “Smoking Silent Killer: Stop Smoking = Stop NCDs” under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Siriporn Poonruksa. The criteria to identify the winner are expert judgment scores and audiences’ vote “Like” and “Share” of a VDO clip, posting in November 2021 through the Youtube and Facebook of Nurse Network on Tobacco Control of Thailand and Nursing Student Club Creating a Smoke Free Society.

The details of “Smoking Silent Killer: Stop Smoking = Stop NCDs” VDO clip mainly focus on a prevalence of electronic cigarette use as it is a global health problem. Cigarette smoking has been proved as an important factor contributing to non-communicable diseases. Cigarette contains nicotine, which damages cells and parts of the human body, significantly impairs the elasticity of the lungs which is the cause of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, chronic obstructive airway disease, lung disease, asthma and diabetes, etc. resulting in death of Thai people and also 6 million people around the world each year or one person every six seconds. Nevertheless, the cigarette smoking cessation techniques “5D” which are Delay, Deep breathing, Drink water, Do something else, and Destination that nursing students have been trained through teaching-learning in the BLNS nursing curriculum are emphasized in every core course of nursing subjects.

The authority persons of Assumption University of Thailand have high concerned on the campaign of “Smoke-Free University”. They always support activities both inside and outside the university aiming to educate people to know the harm of cigarette smoking towards health and empower smokers for successful smoking cessation. In addition, faculty members have been encouraged to conduct research to find out new knowledge to fix the gap of cigarette smoking preventive measure and smoking cessation intervention.
