With deep reverence and ecclesial communion, Assumption University of Thailand (AU) mourns the passing of Reverend Brother Peter Sakda Sakonthawat, f.s.g., Ph.D. Provincial Superior of the Brothers of Saint Gabriel – Province of Thailand, Chairman of the Assumption University Council
Brother Sakda was called to the Father’s house on Saturday, 19 July 2025, in Chiangmai, Thailand, at the age of 59. At the time of his passing, he had completed thirty-four years of religious life in the Congregation of the Brothers of Saint Gabriel. He professed his First Vows on 11 August 1990 and made his Perpetual Profession on 7 November 1998.
In his final ministry, Brother Sakda actively fulfilled his pastoral and formative duties at Montfort College, Chiang Mai. On the day of his passing, he presided over the rite of reception for three new Novices. Following this sacred duty, he encountered a sudden medical emergency. Despite immediate medical intervention, he was peacefully called to eternal rest.
Throughout his religious life, Brother Sakda served with distinction and grace. He held numerous key leadership positions of responsibility. Among these, his tenure as Director of Assumption College Bangkok (2019-2022) marked a significant period of spiritual renewal and educational advancement. He inspired countless students, educators, and alums through his vision, discipline, and profound pastoral care.
A devoted educator and visionary leader, Brother Sakda earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration from Chulalongkorn University. As an alumnus of Assumption College Sriracha, he fully embraced and exemplified the school’s motto: Labor Omnia Vincit – Hard Work Conquers All.
His spiritual patron, Saint Peter the Apostle, was a source of strength and a model of steadfast faith throughout his life and ministry. Brother Sakda embodied the Montfortian spirit of humility, zeal, and selfless service. His legacy is deeply woven into the hearts of all those whom he mentored and led with compassion.
The funeral rites for Brother Sakda will be celebrated in accordance with the liturgical and spiritual traditions of the Institute. All ceremonies will take place at Vacharasomphoch Hall, Assumption College Sriracha, Chonburi, Thailand:
Vigil Prayers and Holy Eucharist: Monday, 21 July to Friday, 25 July 2025, at 19:00 hrs.
Funeral Mass and Interment: Saturday, 26 July 2025, at 10:00 hrs., followed by the Rite of Burial at the Brothers’ Cemetery on the school grounds.
Assumption University joins the entire Montfortian family in offering thanksgiving for Brother Sakda’s life of consecrated service. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Brothers of Saint Gabriel, his family, friends, students, and all whose lives he touched.
May his soul rest in the eternal peace of the Risen Christ, whom he faithfully served.
