Lab Coats On, Curiosity Unleashed: Future Food Technologists Take the Stage at AU

WRITER: THE AU LIBRARY

The Theophane Venard School of Biotechnology at Assumption University of Thailand (AU)  hosted two unforgettable days of hands-on science  and Technology fun on April 26–27, 2025, welcoming high school students to explore the fascinating world of food science through the “Food Detective” and “Food Chemist” workshops.

The journey began with students stepping into the role of curious investigators during the “Food Detective Activity” The journey began with students stepping into the role of curious microbiologists during the “ Food Detective Activity.” Participants explored the hidden world of microbes in their favorite snacks, investigated how bacteria, yeasts, and molds play roles in food production and spoilage, and used scientific reasoning and teamwork to solve microbiology themed challenges. It was a day of discovery, laughter, and eye – opening facts that revealed  the invisible life behind what ‘ s on our plates.

The excitement continued on Day Two with the “Food Chemist Activity” where students donned lab coats and safety goggles to take a deeper dive into the science of food. From titrations to testing acidity and nutrient content, the young chemists got a real taste of university-level lab work. With support from AU faculty and student mentors, participants developed critical lab skills—and perhaps even a career dream or two.

More than just experiments and test tubes, the two-day event was designed to spark inspiration and showcase the role of biotechnology in building a healthier, more sustainable world. And it worked. The students left not only with new knowledge but with new confidence, friendships, and a passion for science that could last a lifetime.

This event is part of the Theophane Venard School of Biotechnology’s ongoing commitment to empowering future changemakers through education, innovation, and hands-on experience. With minds ignited and lab notebooks full, we’re proud to say: the future of food science is in very good hands.

From investigating the safety of foods to mixing up food-safe reactions, the Theophane Venard School of Biotechnology hosted an action-packed two-day event — “Food Detective” and “Food Chemist” workshops — on April 26–27, 2025, at Hua Mak Campus. Designed to inspire high school students to pursue biotechnology, the program delivered hands-on experiments, real lab experiences, and lots of laughter. Across both days, the participants discovered that science isn’t just smart — it’s seriously fun. See you next semester!
