How many campuses does Assumption have?

How many campuses does Assumption have?

Our original ten-acre city campus at Hua Mak was founded in 1969 and has continuously expanded to its present size. A compact, vertical campus, there are a total of 17 buildings with the tallest having a total of 16 floors. A small lake surrounded by lush gardens and trees is a focal point of beauty and tranquility for students to meet and relax. Food, convenience and service shops to support students’ needs surround the city campus. In time, this campus will be designated for Postgraduate studies and the new campus will be home to Au’s Bachelor’s degree studies.

In 1999, the two hundred-acre Bang Na Campus was opened to provide enlarged and improved facilities and resources for students. The “university-in-a-park” is a spectacular assembly of buildings of mixed architecture surrounded by lush, tropical gardens and trees. Only thirty-five percent of the comprehensive campus plan has been completed, with a present teaching capacity of more than 10,000 students. Frequent shuttle buses carry students and faculty between campuses. The Bang Na Campus also has three residence halls which can house more than 2,000 students.

What accommodations are available on campus?

What accommodations are available on campus?

The arrangements for accommodations are different for each of our two campuses. At the Hua Mak Campus in the city, students have a wide variety of housing to choose from. Although there are no dormitories or residence halls on campus, there are a wide range of neighboring townhouses, rooms and condominiums to choose from at reasonable prices. Our International Center provides assistance in finding suitable housing, and helps students make prudent choices of those available. Most students choose to take their meals outside their homes because food is so inexpensive and delicious. Besides, the students do not need to spend time cooking and cleaning up instead of attending to their studies.

At our Suvarnabhumi Campus, there are formal residence halls that have been beautifully designed and furnished with color TV, refrigerator, telephone, private bath and fiber-optic Internet connections. The rooms come in a variety of arrangements such as singles, doubles, triples and quads to accommodate students who wish to live alone or to share with friends. In addition, there are laundry and food services, a well-equipped physical fitness center as well as basketball, volleyball and tennis courts located adjacent to the halls. For the less athletic, there is also a table tennis game room. A comprehensive sports complex has recently been completed which hosts a 25-meter swimming pool, a 50-meter swimming pool,an indoor stadium, gymnasium, fitness room, squash courts, snooker room and table tennis rooms.

Can you describe the Assumption campuses?

Can you describe the Assumption campuses?

Suvarnabhumi Campus

Suvarnabhumi Campus is called a University-in-a-park because of the lush and beautiful gardens and park areas which have been created to reflect the beauty of the buildings and other facilities. There are two small lakes that are surrounded by carefully manicured and landscaped lawns interspersed with shade trees and gardens which make the campus a truly restful place when one is not in class.

At the center of Suvarnabhumi campus is the Cathedral of Learning, a thirty-nine-story tower which offers most of the support services needed by students. In this building, there is an Auditorium, seminar and reception rooms, a copy center, six floors of library including one floor dedicated to digital media, Lecturer’s Offices, and our Intra-Internet Services Department. On the plaza level of the Tower, there is a full-service post office and branch of the Bank of Ayudhya. There is also a wide selection of other facilities: food outlets, a bookstore, variety stores, video rental, photo and personal care shops. Beneath the Tower is secured parking for four hundred cars.

The campus has its own bus terminal for the fleet of shuttle buses which run between the two campuses. These buses are large, air-conditioned two-tiered tour-type buses for the students’ comfort. In addition to this, there is also a fleet of private vans which travel a network of routes to facilitate student comings and goings from other off-campus locations. There are also large, covered parking facilities for students who commute by private car.

Hua Mak Campus

At the Hua Mak Campus, there are similar facilities such as a physical fitness center, a large covered swimming pool, a large variety of local restaurants, copy facilities, library, computer laboratories, bookstore, transportation services, an infirmary, and other support services. The city campus is compact, vertical and also scenic. A small lake for ducks, turtles and swans is the focal point of the social meeting areas which surround it.

In addition to the above listed facilities, the University offers counseling, career development and computing services for student use. The long-term plan is for this campus to become the post-graduate campus, and the Bang Na campus will be occupied by undergraduates.

What about security?

What about security?

Security of one’s person and possessions is important to us all, and Assumption University takes its responsibility seriously when it comes to protecting its students, its Instructors and its facilities. At both campuses, a team of security staff are at every gate as well as throughout the campus to provide aid, to monitor activities and in general to monitor the well-being of everyone on campus. They also remind students of their dress and behavior as well as ensure that only students and teachers enter the campus. The security staff are especially diligent in maintaining the safety of our residence halls on campus.

Does Assumption accept transfer students?

Does Assumption accept transfer students?

Many students studying abroad have transferred to Au. Others, after completing one, two or sometimes three years at Au, transfer their credits abroad and complete their degrees in a U.S., Australian or UK university.

Students transferring into Au often do so because of Au’s significant cost advantage, in addition to the “best in class” education. They have found that studying in the US or Europe has become too expensive and that their families find it difficult to afford the high tuition and living costs associated with an overseas education. Many students who initially wanted to transfer abroad after several years at Au change their minds, but those who decide to transfer are accepted far and wide and have little, if any, problem in completing their degrees from abroad. These students earn a western degree at a greatly reduced cost.

All Au students pay the same tuition fees. Living costs in Thailand are a fraction of those found in Europe, Australia, or the U.S. Many students want to receive their baccalaureate degrees from a western university, but cannot afford the cost. These students come to Au where they can study for one, two or three years and then transfer abroad. Their total educational cost is thus substantially reduced and they gain from both experiences.

Au students have transferred credits and completed their baccalaureates at many US, UK and Australian universities such as: (only a partial listing)

  • The Johns Hopkins University (Maryland)
  • Texas A&M University (College Station)
  • University of Maryland (College Park)
  • Southern Illinois University (Carbondale)
  • St. Michael’s College (Vermont)
  • Loyola College (Maryland)
  • Pittsburgh State University (Kansas)
  • Georgetown University (Washington D.C.)
  • University of Wollongong (Australia)
  • Richmond, The American International University in London

The above is only a partial listing of universities where transfer students have been welcomed. The European Community and Australia are now working on developing a credit exchange that can accommodate a system such as Au’s. When this is in place, more transfer opportunities will be possible.

Do Assumption students study abroad?

Do Assumption students study abroad?

Postgraduate level

Many of those who graduate from Au are not content to end their studies at the baccalaureate level and they go on to graduate school.

Many decide to gain their master’s or doctoral degrees from abroad. These graduates generally study in the U.S., the UK or in Australia. Since Au degrees and programs meet or exceed international standards, they are recognized everywhere. Au graduates attended or already have graduated from some of the most prestigious universities in the U.S., the UK and Australia, including but not limited to…

  • Harvard University
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • University of California, Berkeley
  • University of Michigan
  • University of Illinois
  • Cornell University
  • Carnegie Mellon University
  • University of Melbourne
  • University of Sydney
  • University of Wollongong
  • University of Warwick
  • The London School of Economics & Political Science

Of course, not all graduates make it to the top universities, but still manage to complete their graduate studies at highly respectable places.

An Assumption University education, be it at the Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral level, is a degree of quality and acceptance. Exchange students come to Au and Au students study abroad because our excellence is recognized and accepted. Our graduates are found in some of the world’s finest graduate schools because our students are quality students and they receive a quality education. Au graduates have little difficulty in taking up a challenging career in the local or global competitive arena because they have met the Au educational challenge.

Bachelor’s Degree Level

Assumption University has an increasing number of Exchange Student Programs with other schools. In some instances, students may spend one semester at an institution to broaden their horizons and outlook; or to study a particular subjects not available at Au. In most cases, students from Au “exchange” positions with students at other institutions for one semester or one year. In these cases, students pay their own local tuition fees and fees and then pay overseas room and board charges plus transportation.

What joint degree programs does Assumption have?

What joint degree programs does Assumption have?

Assumption University has several joint degree programs that allow students to study partially at Au and then to complete their degrees at a western university. The degree, awarded by the western university, is thus obtained at a substantially lower cost than having studied at the overseas university full-time. Au currently has nine Postgraduate joint degree programs and one Bachelor’s degree program and is exploring others. Au has recently endorsed additional joint degree programs with colleges in India, especially in the areas of Information Technology and business. These agreements permit Indian students to study partially at their home institution and then come to Au to complete their degrees.
